CLASS and MECHANISM of Action
Generic "Neurontin" was initially synthesized to mimic the structure of GABA for the treatment of epilepsy. Nowadays, Generic "Neurontin" has been widely used as a medication to relieve pain, especially neuropathic pain. Generic "Neurontin" is well tolerated in most patients, has a relatively mild side-effect profile, and passes through the body unmetabolized. Generic "Neurontin" is similar in structure to the neurotransmitter GABA but is not believed to act on the same brain receptors. Its exact mechanism of action is unknown, but its therapeutic action on neuropathic pain is thought to involve voltage-gated calcium ion channels. It is thought to bind to the a2d subunit of the voltage-dependent calcium channel in the central nervous system.
Active Ingredients: Gabapentin.
Other Ingredients: lactose, cornstarch, and talc.
What is Generic "Netontin" PRESCRIBED for?
Generic "Neurontin" is used with other drugs in the treatment of some types of seizures.
Generic "Neurontin" is also used to relieve the pain of postherpetic neuralgia (PHN; the burning, stabbing pain or aches that may last for months or years after an attack of shingles). Generic "Neurontin" is in a class of medications called anticonvulsants. This medicine treats seizures by decreasing abnormal excitement in the brain. Generic "Neurontin" relieves the pain of PHN by changing the way the body senses pain.
